Thisgorgeous statue clockis fresh out of the estate of a high end collector. The photographs of this clock say it all!
This is one of the largest and most ornate of all the Ansonia mantel clocks and is much larger and heavier in person than it appears in the photos. This clock is absolutely huge and quite gorgeous. As you can see it is adorned with mythical dragons with swags on the sides and huge claw feet on the front. In twenty five years of collecting this is one of only a handful of Eueka clocks I have seen for sale and one of only three with the huge Ansonia Boar Hunter statue. When they do appear for sale they usually have no statue at all or have the smaller, less ornate Dagobert statue.None I have seen have ever come close to the beautiful condition of this clock. If you notice, even the center of the dial has an unusual double dragon setting in front of the escapment. This is the first time I have ever seen the double dragon on the escapment of this clock.Usually it comes with the wreath on the center of the dial. It does not get much rarer or better than this one. If you have never seen one of these clocks in person, then you are in for a real treat.
According to the family of the previous owner, he fully restored this clock about four years ago and what a fabuous job he did, especially with all of the contrasting colors on the case. The black portion of the iron case was done in gloss black powder coating, while the rest of the case was done in gold and bronze colored finishes. The bottom sound board may be a replacement, but was done very well if it was replaced. The brass back door is original and has been polished and new cloth put over the openings.
The Boar Hunter statue is excellent. As you can see the tail of the dog is pointing up and should be pointing down and to the side. If it was repaired, I can not see the repair, so either this was a variation done at the Ansonia factory or someone knew what they were doing. Actually the tail to me looks better in the up position since most hunting dogs hold their tails up when prey is located and notto the side(note the original casting hole below the tail).
Also, the spear is a possible replacement, but again, if it is it was done very well. The Japanese bronzefinish on the spelter statue is absolutely fantasitic. It is way to good to be 100 years old, so if it was rebronzed, and I believe it was, than it was done by a professional company who knew how to properly restore statues. Other than the two minor issues to the statue, there are no bends, breaks or missing pieces. The statue is removable and is designed to sit on top of theclock without the need to screw it down.
The original cast brass dial is excellent and has a slight amount of tarnish, but you have to look close to see it. The bezel is a little snug when you close the door, but it is not bent or broken and still retains the orignal glass with a heavy beveled edge.
The original8 day,timeand strikemovement is signed. The movement strikes ona heavy coiled gong.Themovement is in excellent condition,and has been keeping perfect time *(see below) and is probably due for a routine cleaning service since it has been four years since the clock has been restored.The hands are original and excellent.The original pendulum and an old replacement keyare included.
