Rare 1910s Dash-dot-dash Louisville Slugger Professional Baseball Bat For Sale
Rare 1910s Dash-Dot-Dash Louisville Slugger Professional Baseball Bat
Offered is a Rare 1910s Dash-Dot-Dash Louisville Slugger Professional Baseball Bat. This bat has many nice features. First, it is a dash-dot-dash center brand model, dating it to the 1910s. It is a large heavy bat with nice wood. The center brand is a dash-dot-dash 135 in excellent condition. It also has some remnants of the mailing label on the barrel. The barrel brand appears to read "MTV" although I'm not sure what it means. It has sidewriting that is difficult to read. I believe it reads "James McLaughlin". I've seen other sidewritten bats with his name on them.
The bat is 34.5" and 36 oz. It is a professional quality bat of the era and feels great to swing. It looks like someone may have tried to invent the cup bat by drilling some wood out of the barrel to reduce the weight.
The bat has a great Hornsby style knob that has no missing wood or separation. The handle is not cracked but it has a dent. It has no nails or missing wood. There is a crack near the end of the barrel. It shows other nicks and scratches common with game used baseball bats. Please see images for condition.
Overall, the bat has a desirable Dash-Dot-Dash center brand and lots of great features. It is a thick, heavy bat that feels like a professional bat of the era.
When a player broke his bat in the early days of Louisville Slugger, he would send the bat to the factory and the bat makers would archive the bat in the famous Louisville Slugger vault. Most of the bats were Louisville Sluggers, but there were some other brands archived there as well. When the player wanted to order more bats, the bat maker would use the bat in the archive to make a similar bat for the order. When the company was doing renovations, they were going to send all of the archive bats to the trash but they were intercepted and many were saved. Many pro players had lathe or model bats made to specifications but most minor league and lower players relied on archive bats for their orders. Sometimes the bats have parts of the mailing label still attached.
