Thisextremely raresurvivors medal was issued (968) to those surviving members of the IRISH VOLUNTEERS, who held the 1916 Medal for fighting during the Easter Rising, during the 50th anniversary Celebration in 1966. being that it is the 100th year anniversary next year it is a very important piece of IRISH history.This has to be one of the nicest medals I have seen in all my years collecting.
If you ever wanted one for your collection or to complete a set this is the one to have!!. With the 100thanniversary it will only get harder and more expensive to find this type of Medal not part of a complete set. 1916 S U R V I V O R S M E D A L H I S T O R Y
This golden jubilee commemorative Medal was instituted in 1966 for award to the surviving veterans of the 1916 Rising, the only qualification being that the recipient should be a holder of the 1916 Medal and should be alive on March 31st 1966. The medal is the same basic design as the original but is gilded in silver instead of bronze
Obverse:Exactly the same design as that of the 1916 medal.
Reverse: A plain circular field with the inscription, 1916 CAISC 1966 (1916 Easter 1966). The initials of the manufacturer and a silver hallmark are at the bottom.
Ribbon: 34mm wide, green with 5mm orange edges and a 1mm white center stripe. The green and orange are the same as in the 1966 Medal ribbon.
Suspension: A small ring at the back of the medal through which a larger ring which in turn is sewn to the bottom of the folded ribbon. The ribbon hangs from a silver giltpin-back brooch of the same design as the 1916 Medal.
Designer: Unknown.
Manufacturer: Jewellery and Medal MFG. CO Ltd, Dublin.
Numbers Issued: There were 968 Medals issued and in spite of advanced age, the majority of the recipients managed to attend the ceremonial parade held in Dublin to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Easter Rising.
