Wonderful, rare representation. Remarkably lifelike. Lovely, silk brocade costume, and beautifully crafted hand painted expressive face. Inset glass eyes perfectly executed. He is gofun, a composition type material, with inset eyes, a pale white complexion, likely human hair and original regional clothing. Apx. Dimensions: 11\" high, 7\" wide, 2\" deep. This kind of doll: Probably the first professional dollmakers in Japan were temple sculptors, who used their skill to make painted wooden images of children (Saga dolls). The possibilities of this art form, using carved wood or wood composition, a shining white \"skin\" lacquer called gofun made from ground oystershell and glue, and textiles, were vast.The boy is in good condition considering his antique age, but does show a faint and short hairline crack down one leg, it\'s fine / faint / short and can only be seen close up, very few light markings here and there appropriate to age. His head has a bluish tint below his hair, I can not tell if he came that way or if its from age. He has no chips or dents. Also has a cry / crier box but not able to make it work, not sure but probably an easy fix?Look closely at the pics, the pictures are considered part of the description.
