Amos Ives Root book, "ABC of Bee Culture" was published in 1877 and continues to be updated in the present day as "The ABC and XYZ of Bee Culture." In the late 1890s Root's company started selling beekeeping equipment produced by competitor Dadant and Sons, Inc. The venture was unsuccessful and was discontinued. In 1928 the company began a transition into candle-making when a local priest made a request for high quality liturgical candles. The production of beekeeping equipment was reduced and eventually phased out. The company, now known as Root Candles, is still owned by the Root family and is run by his great-great grandson.

He became interested in bees when one day a swarm of bees hovered over his workplace. As a hobby he read every thing he could find on bees and became the leading authority in the world on bees. He founded the A. I. Root company in 1869 and manufactured a new beehive that for the first time made it possible for beekeepers to harvest their honey without destroying the colony of bees.
He decided to share what he had learned with others so he founded and published a trade journal about bees and named it "Gleanings in Bee Culture." By 1904, it had been in publication for 30 years.
"Gleanings" became more than a publication on bees, it included the other things that Root was interested in such as gardening, science and technology and religion and had an international circulation of some 150,000.
From notorious African Bees to the less dramatic, but equally important subject of wintering, it covers all topics in detail, with well written, easily understood text, and hundreds of photos and diagrams. It is a practical guide for beekeepers, and a handy reference for teachers, researchers and libraries. The glossary contains over 500 words and phrases commonly used in the science and practical application of beekeeping.
