Rare19th century Mettlach lidded Stein.
It is made from stoneware with pewter lid and figurative handle. This pictorial stein depicts an animated scene with a man in a tavern, smoking, playing cards, drinking, gambling and a domestic woman with a broom. There is a fun verse between the man and the woman that reads:
“Jeschöner die Kneip, desto schlimmer für's Weib. Je schlimmer das Weib, um soschöner die Kneip”.
Meaning:“The nicer the tavern, the worse it is for the wife. The worse the wife, so much nicer is the tavern”.
The original design is made by one of the Mettlach’s most well-known artist Heinrich Schlitt, whose signature appears on the stein.
The bottom of the stein has the following marks:
Capacity is 1 liter.
Weight is approximately 3lbs.
Length: approximately 8”.
The widest part including handle is approximately 6”.
