THE SYMBOLS AND DRAWINGS IN THIS BOOK ARE VERY SIMILAR TO THE BATAK DONATED TO THE BRITISH MUSEUM IN 1784. THE LEMON ORACLE , PANAMPUHI IN WHICH A LEMON IS SLICED IN TWO AND OMENS ARE TAKEN FROM HOW THE PIECES FALL. WRITTEN IN BATAK SCRIPT THIS ANTIQUE BOOK IS FROM SUMATRA ISLAND (INDONESIA). IT IS A ANTIQUE MANUSCRIPT HAND WRITTEN ON BARK, TYPICALLY CONTAINING RITUALS, ORACLES AND MEDICINE. THE LANGUAGE CODE IS REFERRED TO AS HATA PODA. THE BOOK IS IN REALLY NICE CONDITION WITH ITS ORIGINAL COVER AND I BELIEVE THE WOVEN STRAP THAT HOLD THE BOOK SHUT IS ORIGINAL AS WELL. MINIMAL LOSS CONSIDERING THE BOOK IS WRITTEN ON A LONG STRETCH OF BARK. THERE IS LOSS TO FOUR PAGES ON ONE END AS CAN BE SEEN IN THE LAST PHOTO, OTHER THAN THAT IT IS VERY MUCH ORIGINAL AND INTACT WITH JUST A FEW SMALL LOSSES TO A COUPLE OF AREAS.THERE ARE TWO HOLES ON THE FRONT COVER THAT WAS USED TO LOOP A FIBER OF SUGAR PALM TO CARRY THE MANUSCRIPT WITH.

The Batak are an ethnic group populating the interior of the province of North Sumatra in Indonesia. The majority of Batak belong to the ethnic group of the Toba Batak who settle around Lake Toba and to the west and south of the lake. It\'s current population is estimated to be around two million native speakers of which a large part nowadays settle outside of their traditional homeland in the plantation belt of the east coast and in Medan and Jakarta.

Like most other ethnic groups in western Indonesia the Batak possessed their own indigenous script which was ultimately derived from the souther Indian Palava script. Although being a literal people, the Batak mainly used their script for magical purposes. They wrote on materials that were easily to obtain: bamboo, tree bark and buffalo bones. The manuscripts in the University of Chicago Library are all written on tree bark. These books often have two wooden covers that are glued to the ends of the leporello-folded strip of bark. The upper cover, which is also the front cover, often has holes through which a cord made from the fibre of the sugar palm (Arenga Pinnata) is looped to facilitate carrying the manuscript. The covers are either plain or decorated with sometimes elaborate woodcarvings. Such a folded book is usually held together by means of a plaited rattan band.

Worlwide there are about 1,000 Batak manuscripts held in public collections. The majority is from the ethnic group of the Toba Batak which is the largest of the five ethnicities that are usually labled as Batak. All five Batak ethnic groups have their own language. The five languages are related but the differences are so pronounced that some of the languages are mutually unintelligible. Each language is written using the Batak script (Surat Batak) but due to the phonetic diversity of these interrelated languages there are also five subsets of the Batak script.
