Rare Antique 14 Kt Gold & Vulcanite Thimble

American * Circa 1890

This very unusual thimble is made Vulcanite* (also called ebonite). The band is solid 14 Kt gold (tested) and is nicely hand engraved. Inside the top it is stamped 7 (size) and it is an American size 7, so I think the thimble is American.

It's beautifully shaped and in excellent condition with no holes, dings or other damage. The band has the name "Nellie" lightly scratched in the cartouche. If you like the rare and unusual this is your thimble.

*Charles Goodyear discovered that rubber could be made hard and strong by heating it with sulfur. He patented the process in 1844, but an English scientist had patented it in 1843 in the UK. This hardened rubber was one of the first plastic like materials (moldable) and was used for all sorts of small items including combs, match safes, pencil barrels, picture frames, jewelry and thimbles.
