Rare Antique Americana 1847 Delhi Woven Coverlet (with Exhibition Catalogues) For Sale
This very rare coverlet is an exquisite piece of classic Americana! In the early 1800's professional weavers, guild trained in Europe, migrated to the USA and set up shop. One of these men was John Holmes who arrived from Paisley Scotland, settling in Delhi, New York where he produced the earliest known 'Delhi' coverlet in 1833. There were only two other weavers who made Delhi coverlets from the 1830's to the 1860's (the apogee of this lovely traditional art form); Asahel Amora Phelps and his son John Benjamin Phelps II.
The coverlet I'm offering up for sale was woven by master weaver Asahel Amora Phelps in Delhi, New York in 1847. He emigrated as a child to Delhi in 1802 but there is no record of him being a weaver until 1828. He's known to have woven only 64 coverlets between 1828 and his death in 1854 however, according to Delaware County Historical Society research, less than half of these are known to still exist in any reasonable shape in museums and private collections.
All Delhi coverlets are double woven, tied down at intervals and the colours reverse on the opposite sides. This one measures 92" x 74".
This one is rendered in blue and white wool and cotton and the design incorporates 12 large medallions, 8 point stars, stylized pineapples, birds, flowers and willows along with an eagle in the corner where the date '1847' is woven. The overall condition of this piece is excellent. Very, very minor staining in a few spots. I have shown it on the floor in 2 of the photos yet this was only to take the picture. It has been safely stored in a dark, sealed moth proof container as long as I've had it.
This coverlet really should be in a museum! In order to promote both scholarship in this classic textile art form and to educate its new owner, this coverlet is being sold along with two excellent and thoroughly researched exhibition catalogues; 'The Flowering of Delhi Coverlets' published by the Delaware Rural Crafts Guild in 1976 and 'The Delhi Jacquard Coverlets' published by the Delaware County Historical Association in 1982.
