Rare Antique Chinese Cantonese Carved Cow Bone Faux Ivory Export Brise Fan 1820 For Sale
For Your Consideration
A Superb Antique Cantonese Carved Ox Bone Faux Ivory Export Brisé Fan dated to the 1820s - With the Monogram "DHB" or "DIB" - Showing The Emperor Tao-kuang seated on the Dragon "Throne"
This lovely fan was made specifically for export to the European market. It is
made of 23 carved and pierced ox (cattle) bone sticks that are connected via a pure silk ribbon (properly replaced). The two guardsticks are carved with 3 figures, a dog or deer and a dragon. The inner sticks are intricately carved on one side with court and servant figures within a palace garden. There are many figures engaged in different activities, e.g. servants with their tools, carrying food and many noblemen and dignitaries. There are also many animals including dogs and deer shown on this fan. The centre shows the Daoguang (Tao-kuang) Emperor seated on the Dragon Throne, represented here a dragon. The emperor is carrying a sceptre and a fan. The Tao-kuang emporer is said to have referred to his throne as "the divine utensil". The reserve in which the scene is placed is flanked by a flying dragon on either side. Above the scene, a monogram is carved into the blades. It reads "DHB" or "DIB". The fan measures approx. 6.75" long and 12.5" wide at its widest point. The measurements for this
fan in centimeters are 17.5 cm long and 31.5 cm wide. The fan is in near perfect
and very clean (almost white) condition. The only flaws I noticed are a few missing background filaments (see photos). In the photos it appears as if the left guardstick on has a long crack, but it is NOT A CRACK, but a natural flaw in the grain of the material.
