Rare Antique Dollhouse Diorama w Architectural Cornices Frieze Corbels Goddesses
We found this antique dollhouse room in a local estate sale: it was once part of a much bigger construction of which little is left. The previous owner though enough of it to save, and we understand why. This room is awesome and the details are so very unique. It will need some restoration, but you will have a hard time finding anything like it. You could have a beautiful display when you add antique furniture and dolls to complete the dioramic scene.Look at the detail in the hand painted goddesses, that is amazing to me. Whoever painted them really had great talent. This house is very early construction, I would guess late 1800's to early 1900's.
Beautiful classical architectural elements seen in the cornices, dentil moldings, and stylized frieze decorations (above the doors) formed of molded plaster appliques!! Additionally, beautifully handpainted goddesses decorate the walls. We can identify Diana with the bow carrying game and Demeter or Ceres, carrying grain.
The architectural elements are formed of plaster, pressed in molds, including cornices, acanthus, dentil crown moldings, with classical columns separating the wall panels, wooden base moldings, plinths, all classical design elements.
The images tell the story better than I can of course.
The floor is of old, old plywood, painted with the stylized sun symbol in the center, it measures 18 x 13 1/2. the two long walls measure 18" x 9 5/8" tall. The short wall with one door is 12 5/8" wide with 1/4" margins outside the mitered top molding, making the assembled width 12 5/8" wideFormer owner did a little restoration and nailed the walls to the floor. We took it apart and will ship disassembled. We also have a library wall from a very old doll house as well that we will be listing soon along with an antique wall sconce that is listed this week so please take a look.
In my opinion the best way to reassemble would be with moldings on the outside of the walls nailed to the floor in a straight line and then with gentle clamping pressure to bond the walls to the moldings with a good wood glue, which would straighten the walls and make the side doors better fit. A little realignment of side double doors might be needed. There is one extra black door included for the side doorway that is currently open completely. It appears to have been restored to some degree. The patterns and moldings on doors are apparently also of plaster over the wood. Included also are a baggie of various brass wood screws, a few doorknobs, and door plates, a few hinges and small brass nails.
