Rare Antique Early 19th C. Paint Decorated Folk Art Rocking Horse Hobby Horse:
earlypaintedfolkart Store An exceptional & rareearly to mid 19th C. paint decorated child's rocking horse or hobby horse, C. 1830-1850. This is one of the earliest examples of this type of child's toy & it has a wonderful folky form. You will see the later horses every now & then, but rarely will you come across one this incredible & early. Theentire piece is hand carved & pieced together, held intactwith hand wrought square nails. The rockers & body of the horse are painted black, the saddle & part of its head are cranberry red & the eyes are a oyster white. He still retains much of the original hair and tail, the saddle is intact with some minor losses. His head has a wonderful profile and the mouth still holds the original wrought iron rings that would have held the harness. There are some minor areas of paint loss, though thehorse is in excellent conditionwith no major damages or repairs. He is the perfect size, measuring 48" wide, 25" tall, the body is 5 1/4" thick & the rockers are 11 1/2" at the widest point.
