Rare Antique Japanese Kawade Shibataro Cloisonne Poppy Vase Silver Gold Mounts For Sale

Up for sale isan Rare Antique Japanese Kawade Shibataro Cloisonne Poppy Vase withSilverMounts & Gold Bottom.

This beautifulJapanese Cloisonne Vase is attributed to Kawade Shibataro. There is a 'Western-derived shape'15 inch cloisonne PoppyVase in the The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection attributed Kawade Shibataro, made between 1908-1915.

The vase up for sale has a Japanese shape with the same poppy decoration. Itcould be earlier because of itsshape design, reminding me of the late 19th century Art Nouveau movement, which drew elementsfrom Japanese Art. Japanese artbecame very popularafter trading rights were established with Japan in 1860's.Japanese history of cloisonne was short and sporadic before 1850, their golden age of cloisonne enamel is between 1870-1920.

Kawade Shibataro, retired from the Ando Studio in 1911, but the museum feels he had direct involvement in the execution of the vase because of the "suburb" quality.

The 3 footed vase up for sale has suburb quality, it has the wireless Poppy design on a light beige-gray purple-pinkish background color changes with light, with silver mounts and gold bottom. The gold bottom is probably a gold wash-gold gilt; gold isalso seen on the inside. It almost looks like solid gold-it has not been tested. Gold mounts-goldgiltis rarely used in Japanese Cloisonne, unless it is of a higher quality.

Although unsigned, Patrons including the imperial household, would request the pieces not to be signed, it was made for a specific buyer, not to be sold in the Ando Shop.

Overall condition. It has a chip on top with 2 areas with minute chipbruises-hairlines, 1 behind chip on top, hairline on one foot. This is a beautiful vase-worth restoring.Displays Complete.

Measuring approximately:6inches tall by 5 incheswide-widest point.
