EXTRAORDINARY JEWISH SEDER / Passover TRAY
18TH / 19TH CENTURY
About 24" diameter.
Large and beautiful embossed brass seder tray. Decorated with numerous scenes of Jewish orthodoxy, including the Ark of the Covenant, Moses with a Torah and the tablets of the Ten Commandments, another rabbi or priestly figure, two guardian lions, etc. Above are ten vignettes with a serpent, goats, wheat, lion, scimitar, etc. Numerous Hebrew characters.
As of this writing, I am still researching this wonderful item. I have been unable thus far to accurately determine its true age or origin. I believe it is probably an 18th or 19th century creation, or perhaps much earlier. Also, I have been unable to interpret the Hebrew characters. I've located a number of other seder trays online, but none as large and elaborately decorated as this one.
I would really appreciate some help on this one. It could be an ancient treasure or it could be as late as the mid-19th century. I've sent out several inquiries, but so far, no one has responded with any help regarding the age, origin, or translation. One person contacted me, suggesting that it's not a seder tray at all, but didn't say what she thinks it is.
My nephew, who has a doctorate in theology, suggested that one of the lines of Hebrew translates as "For an Everlasting Memorial," and that another line is the"Shema" from Deuteronomy 6:4, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one." He further suggested that the image on the left side represents a high priest, probably Aaron, the older brother of Moses, as indicated by the turban and breastplate.
If anyone out there is willing to help, if you have an authoritative opinion on it, with good research references, and/or perhaps a Hebrew translation, I'd love to hear from you!
Overall excellent. Some discoloration near the bottom where a liquid was spilled (visible in the images). Wonderful old brass surface patina. A FASCINATING AND EARLY JEWISH SPIRITUAL ARTIFACT.
