Rare Antique Northwood Glass Cranberry Opalescent Blown Twist Water Pitcher For Sale
Made in the late 1890's - 1903 by Northwood Glass in their Blown Twist design, this 10 1/4" tall pitcher is a beautiful display piece of the opalescent glass maker's art. I've shown a number of closeups, the sixth and seventh showing how the handle is applied. There are often cracks in that area, usually called heat checks. As you can see, there are none of those here, the handle application was made withouit mishap. The fifth picture is a closeup of the bottom - there is a piece of clear tape with two arrows on it. Unfortunately, this points to a curving crack which appears to follow a cooling line. That's the only damage I can find and extends across the full bottom but does not extend up the sides. Given its age, there are some manufacturing anomalies like cooling lines, sometimes called "straw marks".
There are a few small "stones" (unmelted material) in one area (last photo) and some surface irregularities in the body. I also note that it does not sit perfectly flat but rocks a slight bit. The handle is twisted clear glass. It displays beautifully and is available with and free shipping within the USA.
