Rare Antique Silver Old Pawn Navajo Blue Goose Turquoise Nugget Ring 1920s-30's For SaleAntique Old Pawn Navajo Blue Goose Turquoise Nugget Ring 1920's Coin Silver
Disclaimer Time: This is an antique ring, handmade in what certainly appears to be the Navajo style, with age, materials, and techniques consistent with a 1920s-1930s time period. Unless the original tags and paperwork are still attached to a piece of "old Pawn," it has not necessarily ever been pawned. This has become a general term that roughly characterizes older pieces, which admittedly drives specialty dealers up a wall. Also, without that paperwork, the age of any piece of jewelry can be approximated, but it is always just a reasonably educated guess and the exact year is always arguable. Also, Native American Jewelry of this period was almost always unsigned. The pieces were made for personal use, for gifts, or for others who lived nearby and everyone involved knew perfectly well who made them. Over thegenerations, jewelry moved out of the family. It was passed down. Or sold. Or, yes, pawned. Or any of the thousand things that can draw a curtain over the origins of vintage and antique jewelry happened to it. No no oneknows who made itand this creates a problem.
According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, no seller can claim a piece of jewelry is Native American made unless it is signed by a recognized artist of a recognized tribe.
This is an excellent policy, but antique pieces just don't fit into legal cubby holes. While we have a number of sources for our jewelry, we are also often the last chance for undocumented pieces like this, rescuing them from the melting pot, keeping at least some of the excellent work of a couple of generations of what is, from every indication, Native American silversmiths from being lost forever. There is almost never any paperwork linking them to a specific artist from a specific tribe. So we must, legally, call this ring "Navajo Style." The beautiful silversmithing, however, remains as a tribute to a past artist and his (usually "his" in this era) culture. This ring--and its amazing stone--have scores of stories within them, but limited evidence is available to let us know the specifics, so please use your own judgement, do some research to avoid the fakes out there ( has some excellent user guides), and ask us if you have any further questions. We will answer to the best of our ability. We believe the most appreciative buyer is someone who is well-informed about what we are selling.
Size: This is one massive ring adapted to a significant nugget! It is a modest size 5.75, but it projects a full half inch out from the finger! 3/8th inches of that is a unique, handmade silver bezel with only 9 notches, adapting to the individual shape of the roughly polished Blue Goose nugget.
Stone:Even if it didn't have the magnificent name of "Blue Goose Turquoise," this is a wonderful stone!!! It is approximately 7/8th of an inch long by 1/2 inch wide and probably upwards of 1/2 inch deep, depending on how it was leveled and set into the bezel, and we aren't about to take it apart to check! The Blue Goose mine is in Nevada. Local Native Americans seem to have been mining it for a considerable time before a sheepherder mentioned it to an Anglo in the early 1930s and commercial production began. Commercial stones are not slabbed with anything like this thickness!
Markings and Other Details:As mentioned above, this ring has no markings, which is consistent with its age. The exceptionally deep notched simple bezel is anchored on a silver backing with a silver, tight twist rope design. The shank of the ring is thick and smooth. For such a big ring, it is surprisingly comfortable. This amazing ring would be a centerpiece of any collector's collection!
This is a beautiful find in wonderful condition! Too much quality antique and vintage jewelry has been going into the melting pots in recent years. By definition, this is not going to expand the availability of good pieces. This will only gain in monetary value over the years!
