Rare Art Deco Machine-age 'speed Goddess' Car Mascot Lamp C.1930 For Sale
A Rare American, Machine-Age, 'Screen Goddess' Car MascotLamp, with original irredescant'Planet'Glass Shade, circa 1930.
The Machine Age influenced both the Art & Design of the Art Deco period, with it's moderne sleek designbased on a correlation between creative design and modern industry, whilst adopting the elegance andstyle of the Art Deco period. These very radical design statements, suited the new streamline & minimalist tastes of the fashion-concious society of the 1920's & 30's!
This period lamp, is cast in cold-painted spelter & moulded irredescant glass, with a chrome 'Speed Goddess' nudecar mascot, drawn by the light. This automobilia theme is echoed in the shape of the spelter base, with it's moulded streamline design and speed-stripes down the center. This futuristic car shape shows the influence of the earlier science-fiction film 'Metropolis', which depicted a futuristic industrial world full of Art Deco design and taste. The spelter base has some age-related pitting and cracking to the cold-painted finish, adding to the character of the piece. Both the chrome car mascot and glass shade are both in excellent condition. The lamp itself takes a standard screw-bulb, which works fine, and has at some time been re-wired. But as with all old electrical items, it should be tested and checked by a qualified electrician before prolonged use. The original rotary on/off switch to the front, still works fine and is shaped like a gas cap, a nice attention to detail. The base retains old felt lining beneath, to protect furniture.
This stylish period lamp is 155mm's tall, by 220mm's long and 140mm's deep, and quite weighty for it's size. The glass shade slots in to the rounded gallery on the base & is secured by two small screw fasteners.
All pieces are very well wrapped & packed individually in strong boxes to secure safety in transit, and are sent recorded parcel post. International buyers are more than welcome to ask for a shipping quote from Ireland to their delivery destination. Thank you for taking the time to view my sale!
