Rare Art Deco Shyvers Multiphone Coin Op Jukebox Selector Skyscraper Style For Sale
This is a RARE Art Deco, Shyvers "Multiphone" jukebox selector in cast aluminum. The 1935 Shyvers Multiphone was invented by Ken Shyvers, who is also credited for inventing the pinball machine.
The Multiphone is a music selection device that operated over telephone lines from 1939 to 1959. They were typically placed on tables, counters or bars. A patron could deposit a coin and speak with a telephone operator standing at a turntable at the Central Music studio, who would then play a selection in the speaker at the bottom of the Multiphone. These units became popular because they had a record range of 170 whereas jukeboxes only had a record range of 20-48.
This is in overall good original condition and is complete with the blue faceted “jewels”+ blue grill cloth. It has a lock and key to access the coin mechanism, but I do not know if they are orig. It is in good condition considering it's age and years of use, but It needs some serious cleaning and there is oxidation inside and some rust on the inside top - see pics. The body has a few scrapes and wear marks as well as a few surface "pops" that look to be casting flaws. The paper record list has some light writing in one area, a couple minor tears and a darkening in one area that appears to be from tape. This is all on the paper list only and not not on the plastic that covers it. I actually recently saw some replacement record lists for this machine on . This unit has a low serial number #771 on top casting making it an early production model. Also - it's not easy to see in the pics, but "Herb" and "Judy" scratched their names in one side - lightly - probably many, many years ago!
