Rare Austrian Art Nouveau 'the Siren Harpist' Vase By 'turn Vienna' C.1900 For Sale
A Rare Austrian, Art Nouveau Hand-Painted Porcelain Vase, By 'Turn Vienna', depicting a 'Ghostly Siren playing her Harp' luring sailors to her song. A favourite subject of the late 19th Century, in both paintings and the decorative arts, made famous by the English pre-raphaelite painter G.F. Watts, in his painting entitled 'Hope'.
This lovely original glazed & hand-painted vase dates to around 1900.Depicting aghostly figure ofa Siren playing her harp in various hues & gilding, against a deepgreen back-ground. Shehas all the elegant swirls and classical composure of the Art Nouveau period. The technique used in the final firing of this porcelain vase, looks more like enamelled glass on metal rather than porcelain, adding to the haunting image portrayed.The hand-painted jewelled-gilt decorationtoboth the top andthe base of this vase are Royal Woscester quality, with hardly any loss!This stunning vase is free from any damage or restoration & displays beautifully! A rare example of Austrian porcelain at it's best!
Itstands an elegant 185mm's tall by 90mm's in diameter.It is stamped with the Royal Crest 'Turn Vienna, E W'mark &114 for the painter & decorator to the base.
