Description
I recently acquired this heavy cast iron duck decoy from a local Va estate. At first I thought it was a door stop, but then the 90 year old owner told me this was a Sink Box decoy. He explained that back in the 1920\'s and earlier , duck hunters would float large boxes out into the shallows and weight them down with several of these cast iron duck decoys to make the box flush with the top of the water.. Then they would get down inside with their gun and place regular wood floating decoys out on the water around it.. All of this gave the appearence of ducks sitting on the water and perfect ambush hunting. This decoy measures approx. 13" long X 6" wide X 2.5" tall. Its extremely heavy of course, and I am guessing its in the 30 LB range easily. There is a small hole in the reer for a tie down. The paint is worn, but no damages. It has a really great look.
