Rare Colonial "bill Hook" Polearm Head--- Pre Revolutionary War-- Signed For Sale
You are viewing a fine 18th century hand forged iron polearm head. Often called "Bill Hooks" in England. This is believed to be Colonial American. Signed by maker ( Check Photo 3), we have not been able to read the mark, however more cleaning may make it clearer to read. Socket clearly shows a forge welded joint. This item is interesting in that it may have been a weapon or used a tool or possibly both. Similar to fascine knives that I have seen. This one has a single cutting edge with a hook on top. One museum it was shown to said, it might have been a whaling tool used to slice whale blubber, with the hook being used to peel back strips of whale blubber. Any information regarding to item from viewers is always welcome and much appreciated. Size: 13" Long Weight: Overall 2.5 Pounds Condition: Original as found, smooth brown patinated surface, has been lightly cleaned.
