Rare Early Charles Eames Herman Miller Arm Shell Chair Pair Chairs Leather Seats:
Early and very rare pair of fiberglass arm shell chairs by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller. The chairs are dated 1958 and retain the original leather covers. The leather covers have always been on the chairs so the fiberglass has never seen the light of day since the late 1950s. As you can see, the chairs were produced at the famous 4131 Redwood Ave Los AngeIes location.I was able to gently work one cover off and it went right back on and is still tight. The shell is Lemon Yellow. I was not able to get the other cover off so I'm not sure what color the other shell is. I can tell you that these have been together since new. These covers are NOT glued on, they are simply held on by a tight wire band. The bases are anodized gold. I would guess these were custom order pieces from Herman Miller. I can't stress enough how rare these chairs are. Thank you for looking. I am willing to ship international and will use USPS. Please know that I will break the chairs down and try to ship in one box. Thank you.
We quote from the 1955 Herman Miller catalogue, "come with an applied finish on the back of the shell. Chairs upholstered in blue, black, ultramarine, dark grey, charcoal,or navy have a black applied finish on the back of shell; the backs of chairs upholstered in other colors have an applied beige finish." The upholstery itself is all of one material, leather in this case, held on to the shell by an integral wire, sewn into the upholstery material. At this time they had not yet developed the extruded vinyl rim which eventually was used to secure the upholstery on later shells."
