Rare Genuine Ancient Greek Apulian Daunian Pottery Kyathos - 550 B.c. For Sale
A genuine andrare, ancient Graeco-Italic, terracottaKyathos, dating to approximately 550 B.C.
Constructed of a buff,sandy fabric, with circular, flat bottomed body, wide, vertical handle curling up from the base to fold downwards and attach to the rim. The base decorated with a central square surrounded by three circles, the handle and body with further circular and linear patterns, and the interior with four triangular shapes pointing in on each other.
This rare formof vesseldates to the Daunian IIB Subgeometric period (approx 550-500 B.C.), when umber pigment began to be used inplace ofsimple black. The Daunians were probably a native Italic people, who were influenced by neighboring ancient Greek ceramic styles. Their pottery art is thus a fusion between Classical Greektraditions and native taste.
