Rare Historical Dark Blue Staffordshire Plate ~ Steam Boat ~ Diorama Series Nr:
Rare Historical Staffordshire Pearlware Dark Blue Transferware Plate c1830
~ Steamboat and Sailing Ship ~ Diorama Series Transport Views ~ Unknown Maker ~
8" in diameter
A Staffordshire dark blue transferware plate printed with a single funnel steam boat and large sailing ship in the background. In the foreground two men are pulling a small row boat ashore. This series called Diorama has some English views and are marked but the same border used for several American views of transportation, a railway view, the Cadmus and two steamboats, the Fulton and this one. None of the series is marked but possibly by John and Richard Riley of Burslem. This one has an asterisk mark impressed mark on the back. They all use the same border of many delicate flowers and the subject is always nicely framed by arching trees which give the scene a 'grotto effect.'
Both of these views I'm selling are free of cracks, hairlines or chips but both have the same glaze wear on the face; the rims retain their very glossy glaze but the faces are worn.
At 6 o'clock there is a small glaze burst on one flower and the biscuit pottery can be seen beneath, to the right of it is a small triangular shape which is missing transfer and not a chip, there is also a darker line running diagonally between these two spot which is heavier transfer over print. For accuracy there is also one pinpoint nick at 8 o'clock on the inner rim.
Despite the surface wear to the face this is a lovely historical plate that looks great on display.
for looking, !
Please see the other English / Historical Staffordshire / porcelain / pottery / soft paste / pearlware / creamware I have listed.
This sale is for the plate on the left only. I'm happy to combine shipping if buying both.
