Rare House of Lords Robes Belonged to David Maxwell Fyfe, 1st Earl of Kilmuir
Offered for sale is this very unusual item of political and historical interest.
This is the House of Lords Robes which were worn and belonged to Earl Kilmuir, better known as David Maxwell Fyfe.
David Maxwell Fyfe was born in 1900 and died in 1967, he had a interesting and important career. Known as Sir David Maxwell Fyfe from 1942 to 1954, later made an Earl, was a British Conservative Politicial, lawyer and Judge, who combined an industrious legal career with political ambitions that took him to the offices of Solicitor General, Attorney General, Home Secretary and Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. He was in Winston Churchill's government, as well as being appointed as one of the British Prosecutors at the Nuremberg trials. Maxwell-Fyfes effective destructive cross examination of Hermann Goering is still considered by many to be a masterclass. After World War II he was instrumental in the drafting of the European Convention of Human Rights and eventually became Lord Chancellor. However he was a controversial Home Secretary who refused clemency to commute Derek Bentley's controversial sentence, despite the jury recommending mercy.
There are many historical pages that can be searched on the internet for more information.
This is his robes when he was in the House of Lords, complete with original bag. Red wool, both with labels for 'Ede & Ravenscroft Ltd' and handwritten 'Earl Kilmuir'.
Ede and Ravenscroft cut many original robes worn throughout generations of peers.Meticulously maintained, refurbished and altered, ceremonial robes rarely need replacing. The robes are made from scarlet superfine faced cloth a tightly woven wool fabric. They are finely trimmed with three-inch wide ermine bars, and two-inch wide gold oak leaf lace. The number of bars of ermine and gold reveal the wearer’s rank: Duke, 4 rows of ermine and gold bars, Marquess 3 1/2 rows, Earl 3 rows, Viscount 2 1/2 rows and Baron 2 rows. Peers would entrust their robes toEde and Ravenscroft’s safekeeping during the year. The firm checks, labels and packs the robes, ready for delivery to the House of Lords. Hence the labelling on the bags etc.
Please note the robes have been photographed on a female dummy, as I do not have a male version, however it shows the robes nicely. Please note the robes are very heavy and posting will be by courier. Overseas buyers please email for costs prior to offerding.
Conditon; Considering its age, the condition is reasonable, as you would expect there is wear in places. It has been stored in its bag, and has a bit of a musty smell, would benefit from an airing. Unfortunately the silk lining to the inside is worn, detached from several of the edges, holes, splits and stains. Not suprising due to the weight of the wool exterior. Some old repairs, fraying, marks and a few small holes in places. Bag has a few holes, discolouration and has lost one tassle. Both have original labels present, to the front of the bag and also to the robes.
