Offered is the will of Isaac Cox of Philadelphia dated February 13 1776. Cox was a wealthy merchant, patriot and part owner of two private sloops of war, the Congress and Chance that seized two English ships the Dragon and Molly during the war of Independence. Among the cargo of these two ships were twenty negro slaves. The ships and cargo were later awarded to Cox and owners as war prizes and the captured ships turned into privateers.
The will lays out in detaill Cox\'s estate and its distribution among his heirs, including bequeath into my said daughter Martha my Negro man named Pompey an my Negro woman named Hannah....my Daughter in law assigns my negroe Wench Chloe......to my grandson assigns my Negroe Girl Lydia....my Negroe Woman named Lucy be set free immediately at the time of my decease. The will is six hand written legal size pages in very good condition having normal edge wear on the frail paper.
