Rare James Swann & Son Sterling Silver
and Enamel Thimble, Birmingham 1931
SEE ADDITIONAL PICTURES BELOW
Is 1931 the earliest known date for an enamelled thimble by James Swann & Son? I don't recall having seen one made earlier.
Sterling silver and enamel thimble by James Swann & Son formerly of 25 Hylton Street, Birmingham. Plain knurled top over a border of enamelled stylised yellow flowers separated by green scrolls which are probably meant to be stylised leaves. Hallmarked on the flat turn over rim: 9 (the size), JS&S (for James Swann & Son), the Birmingham Assay Office anchor mark, the lion passant for sterling silver, the date letter upper case "G" for 1931. Height approx. 2 cm; internal base diameter approx. 1.5 cm; weight 3.3 grams.
Although the thimble is in round and free of holes it is however not perfect. It has a dent to the crown and some slight enamel loss particularly to a few of the green scrolls.
