Rare Judaica/jewish Baseball Uniform Early 1900's Unique Memorabilia - Est $100k For Sale
Vintage YMHA Jewish Baseball League Uniform c. 1850's - Very Rare! Est $100K!!! Item Description You are offerding on one of the first baseball uniforms worn in the Young Men's Hebrew Association Jewish Baseball League. The 2-piece uniform is in excellent condition and has been carefully preserved. The pants have a button-fly and the jersey has a beautiful blue and white Star of David patch with "YMHA" embroidered in the center. Our research shows that this antique uniform may be dated back to the mid 1910's to 1920's and could very well be one of the earliest pieces of Organized Jewish Sports Memorabilia. The condition of the uniform is excellent for an item this age. The pants show some "foxing" coloration, which is typical of antique clothing but overall, the uniform has been preserved extremely well.
The YMHA (Young Men's Hebrew Association) was established in 1854 in Baltimore to offer assistance to Jewish immigrants. The New York YMHA and YWHA (Young Woman's Hebrew Association, est. in 1888) now operate together as the 92nd Street Y in New York City.
Baseball is believed to have been invented towards the late 18th century by Civil War officer Abner Doubleday however, he was not accredited to the sport's establishment until after his death.
The first team to play baseball under modern rules was the New York Knickerbockers. The club was founded on September 23, 1845, as a social club for the upper middle classes of New York City, and was an amateur league that included players like Alexander Cartwright. The "Knickerbocker Rules" altered the more aggressive rules like "soaking" or "plugging" the runner which allowed players to hit the runner with the thrown ball, putting him out of the play. The Knickerbocker Rules required fielders to tag or force the runner out, as is done in today's game.
In 1857 the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) was formed and was the first organization to govern the sport and to establish a championship.
