RARE!When you can find only one copy of a book for sale by any of the gazillion internet booksellers and only 6 in libraries around the world (all in U.S.), I’d say the book is an extremely rare one.And it’s as ruggedly Americana as a person could wish for. There’s the Wild West (Texas/Denver), Indians, Cowboys, Cattle Drives & Wild West Shows to mention a few subjects.
In addition, when you find the only (other) available copy can be yours for $2,500, you might want to consider this one.
The book’s full title is Life and Adventures of “BUCKSKIN BEN” (Ben Stalker) Twenty Years A Cowboy Thirty Years a Showman.Printed by Schmitt Printing Company, Columbus, Ohio, ca 1910.
More images and commentary continue below my three "Prime Directives:"
1st: I never, under any circumstances, use a reserve, and rarely do I ask for an opening offer of more than $9.00 (sometimes even less).
2nd: I never end sales early.
3rd: I don’t usually clean, repair, or otherwise monkey around with anything. I push enough dust aside to expose any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. If it has a flaw or a wart, I'll tell you about it.
So rest easy and have some fun.
The book is softcover in original wraps, (stapled) 32 pages and 5” x 8”.There are 3 illustrations—2 photo & one line drawing. The cover has a photo image of “Buckskin Ben” decked out in full cowboy attire sitting astride his horse.
CONDITION:Not perfect, but pretty close.Paper is age toned & tender with minor signs of wear & light stain on cover.Original price of 25 cents stamped near bottom. Last page & back cover have tips of lower corners missing.I have no qualms about saying this is likely the best copy you’ll ever find…if you do ever find another.
“In these pages will be found a faithful account of my life, the anecdotes of personal daring, the description of men and places, the fragments of history and accounts of campaignings….As an auxiliary to the study of history, such reading is always entertaining and profitable…Yours Truly, B. S.”from Preface
I’ve read enough of this fascinating book to know it’s a page turner!
Some of Stalker’s remembrances include trapping a big bear, driving cattle from Texas to Chaldron, Nebraska, joining the Texas Rangers, breaking horses on Whistler ranch in the Sac and Fox country, Wells Fargo, Winchester Rifle, Round Up, Mavericks, Cutting Out (“The process of cutting out a cow and calf is very pretty if neatly done.” Branding Cattle, Stampede. From page 21 on, the subjects cover Staring in Show Business (in 1886).(“I made a dozen big knives and done what we called the impalement act.”)Wild West shows in Indiana, including wintering in Huntington. In the early 1900s, he even took his show to Cuba!He ends with a full page poem about his children & Mom (his wife) & retirement.
My preferred method of payment is PayPal.
