This exquisite piece of history has been in my care since the mid 1990\'s where it was purchased in an antique shop in Newport, RI, USA. It was stored in a climate controlled Environment and was actually used to store some valuable china and crystal.By famed French luggage maker Louis Vuitton, produced circa 1890, (during Louis Vuitton\'s lifetime) shortly after his iconic \"Damier\" checkerboard pattern debuted. The canvas features checkerboard squares of 3/4 inch size (2 cm) in tan and dark crimson red on a dark brown ground. The red version of the \"Damier\" is the rarest of the two pattern colors produced. Scattered in the design are squares which read \"VUITTON MARQUE DE FABRIQUE DEPOSEE\" (an early trademark marking).
Solid and sturdy construction of iron/metal bands at the edges and corners, two latches and a central large locking latch with a key (sorry--no key included). Two large hinged metal handles at either side. Outer wooden slats with brass rivet nubs to protect while being stacked in a ship\'s cargo hold. The ends of the trunk are painted with \"AB\" in red, but no other stickers, etc. The base is silver metal (zinc or nickel?) with additional wooden slats and invisible metal casters that are functional. Inside is lined in tan fabric (a linen-like cotton), the inner lid is padded with purple ribbon latticework (to tuck photos, documents, mementos) secured with small brass tacks. There is a large original paper label which reads \"LOUIS VUITTON LONDON PARIS\" with shop addresses, images of crests, and award medals, as well as the trunk\'s original production serial number #34421. Included is an inner removable tray (wooden construction covered/lined in the same tan fabric) with wide striped adjustable straps with metal buckles.Overall exterior measurements are 18 1/4 inches high (46 cm) x 34 inches wide (86 cm) x 19 inches deep (48 cm). The inner tray measures 5 inches high (13 cm) x 32 inches wide (81 cm) x 18 inches deep (46 cm).Comes to you in completely unrestored and untouched condition (I only wiped it with a damp cloth). There are some very old water marks on the interior fabric lining, as well as some fabric edge fraying and some ribbon loss on the inner lid. There are some minor nicks in the canvas and some fraying at the outer bottom edge. Please zoom in to see photos\' detail and feel free to contact me for additional photos if needed.
