Rare Large Art Deco 'diana The Huntress' Lamp Signed Janle, Of Le Verrier C.1935:
A RareLarge French Art Deco 'Diana the Huntress' Lamp, cast inverdigris-bronzed Spelter & Ivorine, signed by Janle, commonly believed to be a pseudo-name for Pierre Le Faguays, who worked for the Max Le Verrier foundry in France.
This period lamp, is cast incold-painted, verdigris bronzed spelterwith a largecarved-ivorine bow,depictingthe figure of Diana in mid-hunt,kneeling on the polished marble base,creating a striking figure, whilstaiming at the moon-like globe lamp in front of her.
In Roman mythology, Dianawas the goddess of the hunt and the moon, often shown with wild animalsamongst woodland, and having the power to talk to and control these animals. This lamp shows her in mid-hunt with the moon like shade casting the lightahead for her prey.This lamp is believed to be cast by the famous foundry of 'Max le Verrier', who created similar iconic Art Deco sculptures and lighting, with their spelter pieces always having the classic greencolour of the verdigris bronze coating,the sculptors employed, likeLe Faguays,found fame for their striking pieces that encapsulated the aesthetics of the Art Deco period in 20th century France.
All is in lovely original condition, withvirtually no lossto the cold-painted finish, only certain areas of high relief showing the gold colour of the bronze coating beneath. The large original Ivorine bow has also survived in perfect condition. The figure is seperatly cast & screw-bolted to the heavypolished marblestand, with the lamp wiring runningbeneath. It is signed 'Janle' in script on the rear of this base, behind her foot. The lamp itself takes a standard-fitting bayonet bulb, which works fine and has at some time been re-wired. But as with all old electrical items, it should be tested and checked by a qualified electrician before prolonged use. Thefrosted opaque glass-shade is free from any cracks orchips and diffuses the light beautifully, it is held by a spring clasp to the gallery beneath.
This large & stylish period lamp is an impressive 310mm's tall, by 375mm'slong and 130mm's deep, andvery weighty with the solid stone base.
