Rare Large Austrian Art Deco Spelter 'scarf Dancer' Striker By Lorenzl C.1925 For Sale
A Rare Large Austrian, Cold-Painted Spelter 'Scarf Dancer' Table Striker or Lighter on Marble, designed by Josef Lorenzl, around 1925.
Josef Lorenzlwas one of the most famous & prolificsculptors of the Art deco period. He produced figurative pieces in both bronze, spelter and porcelain, where he worked along side Stefan Dakonat the famous Austrian Goldscheider factory. His pieces depicted the style and elegance of the period, where his ladies with their slim elongated, almost boy-like features found fame throughout Europe and the world. His sense of style & glamour, reflected the revolution in society of the roaring nineteen-twenties and thirties!
This paticular piece is cast in cold-painted spelter, as a gentleman's table lighter or striker, with varieing huesof coppers, golds & silvers to thedancer. It depicts arisque 1920's dancing girl, wearing just her under-garments whilst swirling a silk-scarf around her, creating the dramatic pose, pure Art Deco in herstyling and serene glamour! She stands atop apolished striated-black marblebase. It is this base that holds the Egyptian Revival 'Lotus Flower' decorated jardiniere stand, thatwould of contained the lighter fuel. The striking plate is situated on the side of this decorated stand, which still contains the original wand for lighting. All is inamazing condition, with justa couple of tinystrike marks near the striking plate, showing original signs of use. Boththe figure and marble baseare free from any repairs or damage. This paticularfemale model seems to of been a favourite of Lorenzl's, as she was produced in several of his figures and strikers, either posedwith butterfly wings instead of the scarfor seated, elfin-like, on raised stands.
She stands animpressive 275mm's tall by 170mm'slong and 90mm's deep, and is very heavy forthe size, with the marble base!
