A rare & exceptional early 19th C. large painted candlebox, c. 1820-1840. This piece retains most of an early Prussian blue painted surface. The sides are wonderfully dovetailed & it is constructed with hand wrought square nails & wooden pegs. The lid is champhered on three sides, it fits perfectly & slides easily. The inside has a piece of wood that separates the box into two compartments. This probably would have been used for a small community as the box is too large for a common household. There are a couple small areas of wood loss, on the bottom board (pictured). It has some early age splits on the top & bottom &the back part of the box has an early spilt at the top. This incredible early candlebox measures 23 1/2" long, 11 1/2" wide or deep & 8 1/2" tall.
