As one of the movement’s originators, Yaacov Agam’s art is the preeminent modern example of the kinetic movement. He is the highest selling Israeli artist in history. As people begin to appreciate the role the kinetic art movement played in art history, Agam’s work has continued to increase in value and popularity.Yaacov Agam has a long history of classical artistic training. Born in 1928 in Israel, he trained at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. He moved to Zurich, Switzerland to continue his artistic studies and later to Paris, France. While he was trained classically, he soon became interested in experimental art. He is considered one of the founding fathers of the kinetic and optical art endeavors of the mid-1900s.Kinetic art is known for its use of moving components and it can be created through any medium. Agam is considered to be one of the most influential kinetic artists of all time. He opened the first one man show entirely dedicated to kinetic art in 1953. Agam believed that kinetic art forced the audience to question their pre-conceived notions about how an audience interacts with art. The kinetic movement began because artists were looking for better way to connect to the audience with the constraints of traditional art. Kinetic art allows artists to explore three or four dimensionally and deal with the subjects of space and time.Yaacov Agam’s artwork often brings in elements other than simply the visual. There are often light, sound, and tactile elements to his creations. He has become famous for his original printing technique, known as an “Agamograph.” This technique uses lenticular printing to present a series of varied images depending on the angle the image is observed. Agam’s 1969 masterpiece Complex Vision shows this technique implemented on a massive 30 foot by 30 foot scale. This technique has expanded the boundaries of optical art, creating abstract images and optical illusions that encourage audiences to focus on not how the artwork looks, but how their interaction with the artwork creates an experience. The founders of the kinetic movement, including Agam, were not merely looking for a new way to push the envelope in the art scene. They were looking for a more complete way to express their identity and communicate with the viewer. Yaacov Agam’s art often deals with his own spirituality. His father was a Rabbi and Agam views his art as another way to explore his religion. While Agam may have created art to aid him on his own spiritual journey, his original concept was embraced be art enthusiasts everywhere. He has created some of the world’s most monumental works of art. Likely his best known piece was created in 1987 at the Whaling Wall in Jerusalem. It was created to honor the victims of the holocaust. His dynamic sculptures and three dimensional paintings can also be found at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., the Parliament in Strasbourg, and at JFK airport. He has also created a number of large scale temporary art installations; the most famous covered the Elysee Palace in Paris in 1972.It is clear that Agam believes in the artistic and personal value of his art, but he also values it on an intellectual l level. During the 960s he was a guest-lecturer at Harvard University. He has also emphasized nonverbal learning in children and utilized his art as a tool in this process. In 1996, he was awarded the UNESCO Jan Amos Comenius Medal for creating a powerful visual method to aid in children’s education. Original Art Broker has a great selection of Agam pieces.
