Incredible HiroshigeMasterpiece, 1905!

AndoHiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858), also known as Utagawa Hiroshige, was a masterof the Japanese art of ukiyo-e, color woodblock prints. The subjects ofHiroshige’s work were atypical of the ukiyo-e genre. Most artists of his timefocused on beautiful women, popular actors or scenes of the yoshiwara, thepleasure districts of the Edo period, 1603-1868. However, Hiroshige is bestknown for his landscapes and images of birds and flowers. He was one of the first toutilize unusual vantage points, striking colors and realistic perspective. In fact Hiroshige’sgenius for landscape composition was even recognized, and sometimes copied, bythe great European Impressionist painters such as Vincent Van Gogh.

Hiroshigewas born in 1797 in the Yayosu Quay section of the Yaesu district of Edo, present-dayTokyo. He was of samurai background and was the great grandson of TanakaTokuemon who held a position of power under the Tsugaru clan in the northernprovince of Mutsu. His grandfather, Mitsuemon, was a samurai archeryinstructor. His father, Gen’emon, was warden of the fire brigade for Edo castle.Shortly before his death, his father handed over his duties to Hiroshige.Hiroshige was twelve at the time.

Ataround the age of fourteen, about 1811, Hiroshige sought to study paintingunder the tutelage of Toyokuni of the Utagawa School. However, Toyokuni alreadyhad so many students he was unable to accept him. Fortunately, a librarianintroduced Hiroshige to Toyohiro, another established artist and instructor ofthe same school whom he studied under for a number of years. During his earlyyears in addition to the techniques of the Utagawa School, Hiroshige alsostudied those of the Kano School. His apprentice work included the usual bookillustrations and single page ukiyo-e prints of female beauties, kabuki actorsand samurai warriors. In 1823 Hiroshige resigned his position as fire wardenand devoted the rest of his life to painting. It is estimated he created morethan 5,000 images, specializing in landscapes and kacho-e, bird and flowerprints.

This wonderful image is one of Hiroshige’smasterworks.

This print would be a superb choice for any collector. It is trulya classic image from the golden age of ukiyo-e. It was made from meticulouslyrecarved wooden blocks using exactly the same technique – and with the sameexcellent detail and rich color – as the original. Later edition prints likethis make an exciting addition to your collection and are a wonderful way todecorate – at a small fraction of the staggering cost of a first edition print.

Matted and framed, this print would make a stunning presentationby itself or as an impressive addition to an arrangement with other prints. Itis one you will be proud to display in your home or office and is bound tobecome a cherished family heirloom.
