The unit is actually 2 pieces, and the top floats on the bottom. The bottom piece measures: 72\" L x 20\" D x 31\" T, the top cabinet measures40.5\" T x 52\" W x 14 3/4\" D.

The shelves are not interchangeable, but are incredibly sturdy-- and could hold a good amount of weight. The top space between shelf and top measures 13 5/8\" the next space is a tad smaller between the two shelves measures 12 1/4, and the bottom space is 11 3/4.
