Rare Nickel Avery Vintage Apothecary Pharmacy Balance Scales And Boxed Weights For Sale
In earlier times, we had to rely on passing or visiting apothecaries for our medicines. To dispense them, the apothecary used sets of hand held beam balances and weights. These had panes made of varying materials depending on the preparation being dispensed and the scales continued to be used in dispensing chemists until the advent of more modern weighing machines.
This sale is for a superb and increasingly rare set of scales. The set was made by the renowned English manufacturerA&T Averyof Birmingham; a company still in operation today.
The set is a rare example being nickel plated brass and having a metal covered base box.The setis operated by depressing a lever, which lifts the beam and pans, enabling items to be weighed. The 7.5" beam is marked Class B (for accurate weighing) and this dates the set to post 1907. The set hastwo nickel plated panes (one with a handle)and one glass panebrass panes, measuring 3" in diameter. I am afraid they are not perfect as the hooks at the end of beam have been replaced and one of the cages supporting the panes is repaired. There are also a number of brass apothecary weights, in a card tub. The black stained drawer/box measures 9.75" by 5" by 2.5" high and the scales are 14" in height. The drawer has a turned knob inset with white.
The scaleshave a complete set of nickel plated weights, still in their original packing box. The velvet linedpolished wooden box in in perfect condition and measures 5.5 x 4.25 x 2".The weights are from 50g to 1mg and have the original forceps for the smaller foils.
A stunning and highly collectable piece of history. Please note that this is a heavy set andwill be expensive to ship outside the UK
