Rare Original Art Deco Bronze 'zephyr Dancer' On Onyx, Signed By Lorenzl, C.1930 For Sale
A RareAustrianCold Painted Bronze 'Zephyr Dancer' on a Green Onyx Plynth, signed Lorenzl to the plynth, circa 1930.
Josef Lorenzl was one of the most famous and prolific sculptors of the Art deco period. He produced figurative pieces in both bronze, spelter and porcelain, where he worked along side Stephan Dakon in the famous Austrian Goldscheider factory. His pieces depicted the style and elegance of the period, where his ladies with their slim elongated, almost boy-like features found fame throughout Europe and the world. His sense of oppulence and sexual liberation, reflected the revolution in society of the roaring nineteen-twenties and thirties!
This period piece, designed by Lorenzl,is cast incold-painted bronze, with pearlescant silver to the dancer and coppery browns to her hair and octagonal bronze socle. It depictsa 1920's nude dancer, striking a dynamicpose, on one tip-toed foot. Herstylised shapeand sense of movement, is reminicent of the many car-mascots of the era. A version of this model, with a more angular pose, was designed by Lorenzl as a car mascot, also in bronze, around the same time entitled 'Zephyr'. This paticular version seems more dynamic in her pose, suggesting a sense of speed combined with the streamlined elegance of the female form, pure Art Deco in it's sculpting and the periods style & elegance. Shestandsatop a two-tier polished Brazilian green onyx base, to which she is thread bolted and signed 'Lorenzl' in script to the rear-top. All is in lovelycondition, free from any major loss, with just the tip of her nose & tiny speck on fore-head showing the under-lieing gold of the bronze. The onyx base has one small chip to the rear-corner of the bottom of the top piece of onyx, which is hardly noticeable, as it is where the two pieces join to form the plynth.
This stylish periodVienna Bronzeis animpressive240mm's tall, by 190mm's long & 90mm's deep, andis quite weighty for it's size.
