Here we have a pair of hard to find antique 19th century fusee adjusting rods. One is meant for pocket watches and the larger one is for full size chronometers, table or bracket clocks. As most clock and watchmakers are aware, fusee mechanisms were incorporated into timepieces in order to promote more uniform torque from a coiled mainspring through the course of its running period. As a tightly coiled maispring releases its stored power as it runs down, and it delivers less and less torque to drive the watch or clock mechanism. The conical fusee pulley attempts to compensate for this by providing a greater mechanical advantage as the spring runs down. The contour of the fusee is matched to the spring within the barrel through use of the fusee adjusting rod and the helical groove in the fusee is turned to help match the torque profile of the spring. This was a time consuming process where the fusee adjusting rod acts as a scale of sorts to indicate the varying torque. These two rods have a nice patina and are ready to sit in an advanced horological tool collection, or go to work for their intended purpose!!
