Rare Pair Of Staffordshire Pearlware Busts ~ Rousseau & Voltaire ~ C1800 No Resv:
Rare Pair of Staffordshire Pearlware Busts on Pedestals circa 1790-1820
~ Matching Busts of Two Poets ~ Rousseau & Voltaire ~
Each about 6 1/2" high
This matching pair of Staffordshire pearlware bust possibly had a third as they are very similar to a bust of the English poet Matthew Prior. The Rousseau and Voltaire are generally found alone but rare to find two with matching coloration. See the inserts below with examples found on the V&A site, some attributed to Enoch Wood & Sons and others that are similar but attributed to Derby Duesbury Factory; this turquoise green is very similar to many Derby figures.
The facial features are finely and realistically painted, Rousseau's ermine hat and collar are dotted with black touches, both have their deep red undercoats and lavender draping. Both have black and grey faux marbled painted pedestals and both have their names impressed on the rear bases; Voltaires is impressed twice!
These are both in excellent condition and display beautifully despite some faults; they are however, sold as found.
Above; Rousseau's hat has some flaking to the black enamel at the back.
Above; the Rousseau bust is in excellent condition; there is an old nick at the tip of his nose and two small nicks on the lavander robe.
Above; Rousseau is impressed in the base. The footrim has some old green felt pads still attached. His left should has a bit of pottery stuck in the crease of his jacket.
The bust of Voltaire is in lovely condition however I believe he has been re-attached to the pedestal (not by me) ; There is a crack all the way around the seam of the pedestal and about an inch below that is tight, so it has probably been off, there is a crack across the base and chipping around the footrim, and a small patch at the front footrim is discolored, probably repainted. Despite all that, he sits very securely and looks wonderful.
