Rare Revolutionary Rev War Era Expanding Bar Cannon Ball Shot 18th C Naval 1812
Rare Form - Antique 18th Century/Early 19th Expanding Bar Shot - Rev War/War 1812
A rare item indeed, this was probably a piece originating from Bannerman's Island (a military surplus outfit that had a retail operation selling odd bits of used and unused militaria goods from the 18th through 19th century)
Expanding bar shot was an interesting variation on your standard cannonball shot.
Upon firing, the piece would expand to increase the path of destruction.
These were often times used more in naval warfare as the shot could take down masts of enemy ships, etc.
On land or sea this must have been a viscious article of warfare.
The set measures 11" tall with the four bottom segments forming a diameter of 2 3/4".
Once open the piece would expand via the four shafts connected by a center ring.
Slight pitting from age, else very good+ condition. Please take a moment to click the images and you'll see you can produce enlargements that help to further condition and construction.
Simaliar examples can be seen inRound Shot & Rammers,The Collectors Encyclopedia of the American Revolution, and other books on period militaria.
A great rare addition to any period military collection, up for only five days with .
