Rare Revolutionary War PHILADELPHIA Pennsylvania Newspaper w/ JUDAICA Jewish Ads (Note: additional images are located below the description) Shown is an original & historic old newspaper, offered to enhance your collectible interest: THE PENNSYLVANIA JOURNAL & WEEKLY ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, March 1, 1783

* Rare 18th century American title
* Great masthead engraving for display

It is possible two advertisements have more significance than the content in this issue. The back page has a rather large ad for "Haym Salomons", the noted Jewish financier. Salomon was a Jewish emigrant from Poland, imprisoned in 1778 by the British for aiding the Revolutionaries and was condemned to death, but he escaped to Philadelphia. There he started a successful brokerage business. He aided Robert Morris in obtaining loans from France and pledged his own fortune to the new government to maintain its credit. Salomon was never recompensed and he died impoverished. Also on the back page is a nice ad headed: "Broker's Office by ISAAC FRANKS..." with much detail. Franks was a noted Jewish financier & served under Washington during the Revolutionary War.

The front page is filled with ads, in the middle of which is a "Sixteen Dollars Reward" for a runaway Negro man, with details (see photos). Page 2 has a note from Philadelphia noting: "...sailed from hence a Flag brig with 14 or 15 families, for Charlestown, from whence they were drove contrary to their capitulation by the savage Britons. We hear 3 transports are fitting out at New York to carry the poor deluded new subjects of Britain to take up their abode in the cold regions of Nova Scotia, St. Johns, it is said is to be the land of refugees, alias, the prison formed by Britain for American traitors..." (see photos). There are other relating to concerning the end of the Revolutionary War as well.

Four pages, very large & handsome engraving in the masthead, a bit irregular at the spine, generally nice condition.
