Rare Staffordshire Pearlware ~ Peace And Good Old Times ~ Plate Blue White C1820 For Sale
Unusual English Staffordshire Pearlware Dark Blue Transferware Plate c1820
~ PEACE AND GOOD OLD TIMES ~
61/2" in diameter
An early finely potted English Staffordshire soft paste pearlware glaze plate printed with a dark blue transfer and painted around the rim with brown enamel, this has the feel and look of some Salopian ware. This transfer scene is unusual with a cupid holding a banner that is attached on one side to a palm tree which reads 'PEACE AND GOOD OLD TIMES,' there is a large sail boat and city on the distant shore. Probably intended as some sort of gift, it seems inappropriate as a child's gift and doesn't really commemorate an event.
In excellent condition but with some faults easy to overlook because of its rarity; there is a short hairline from the rim at 4 o'clock and a very very faint one around 6 o'clock. The top of the plate (shown below) has a small patch that is not glazed. The back has some stray marks and pottery imperfections and two very tiny, darkened chips at the rim.
