This is a rare and historic steering wheel from the captain’s gig of the battleship USS West Virginia (BB-48). The captain’s gig is a small boat used to taxi the ship’s captain to and from the ship. The steering wheel is marked W VA CAPT GIG in the center on both sides.The USS West Virginia was present at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. Though damaged during the attack, she was repaired and went on to participate in combat operations in the Pacific during World War II, including in the Philippines (such as Leyte Gulf), Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.Overall, this item is in good, used condition. It shows expected signs of wear.
