Rare Zuni John Gordon Leak (d.) Knifewing Inlay Bracelet For Sale
A rare Zuni substantial sterling silver bracelet with the Knifewing guardian figure inlaid into an oval onyx center, the work of Zuni master silversmith John Gordon Leak (d.), active from 1935 to 1952, renowned for his mosaic inlay, repousse and exquisite stampwork, as can be confirmed in this bracelet. His work is highly collected and can be found in museum collections such as the Heard Museum, Phoenix. He was a silversmith for the highly esteemed C.G. Wallace collection. This Knifewing figure is composed of turquoise, spiny oyster shell and mother-of-pearl inlays, set into a field of onyx, within a frame of inner twisted silver wire, within a second frame of small silver rosettes. The bracelet is a triple split shank with wonderful crisp stampwork to the terminals, with stamped fan-shaped scallop-edged cross supports to each side of the inlay medallion. Unmarked. See more examples of Leak's Knifewing inlay work in Schaaf's BIOGRAPHIES book, as well as Paula Baxter's SOUTHWEST SILVER JEWELRY, pp. 128-129. Bracelet measures 1 3/8" wide at center, 5 5/8" inside end to end, an additional 1" gap, and weighs 58 grams. Excellent vintage and collectible condition.
