The shape of this ciwara shows it originates from the Bougouni region in Mali.

In Mali, the crest tchiwara represents the most known product of art. « It is reproduced and associated with a symbolics of bravery and gratefulness. » according to Samuel Sidibé. The tchiwara, an hybrid being, which taught men how to cultivate the earth is a benevolent being associated to the fields fertility and men prosperity. This crest is typical of the ethnic group Bambara. Today it is one of the first symbols of the contemporary Mali.
