Oh dear! My regulars will have seen this bustle over the years, and it is rather rare. I have often been asked to sell it. So, when I got a poor condition but fine for my use, second bustle, I thought I would sell the rare one.
However, it was really quite stained, so it had to be washed.
The result is that it has washed fine, but the bands of black fabric had dye loss, resulting in a blue rinse for the bustle!
There is also a bit of red, and I have no idea where this has come from!!!!!
Other than this, the bustle frame is absolutely typical of the late 1870's to early 1880's period. The jazzy printed fabric can often be found in the linings of Victorian bodices of the same period. I would say it is more 1880's than 70's, but it is just a guess based on the fabric.
The bustle has no manufacturers name or label, but does not appear home made. It is mostly sewn in machine chain stitch.
As I hope you can see, it has side 'curtains' and a bottom pleated skirt.
The main attraction is the 'double bustle' feature.
At the back waist, we have a very firm 'rump pad' with a horsehair filling. This would give the immediate bustle shape for bodices with tailed backs.
Then, below this, is the bustle cage, that extends down to approx the knees. I do not know what the struts are made of, but the inside bits of rust suggests that these are metal.
They are completely encased, of course.
The bustle gives a very cheeky shape and is very attractive in it's own right. A bit like a beehive!
Ties to the front make it suitable for a variety of waists, but I would suggest sizes 8 - 12 max.
I'm just sorry about the blue rinse, but hairdressers have relied on blue rinses for many years!
Bits of wear and sewing to do, including one bit of seam undone to the horsehair rump, a tear to the lower part, quite untidy but not noticeable and not under strain.
I shall miss it!
Very easy to ship - it folds down to nothing!
