WELCOME to the Baby Layette & Dolls Department of Poppies Cottage!
Everything for the most wonderful baby or dollin the World!
Here is the most delightfully complex 'collapsed' bustle gown for a tiny girl, with bonnet, dating to circa 1880 - 1882.
See Bradfield for almost identical gown.
She is just a tiny bit too large for my baby mannequin and as Victorian children were so much smaller, I am thinking she would fit a little grl of 3-5 years.
My absolute delight is that she has true smocking to the upper chest and back. So fabulous! But there is far more than smocking to please you.
Fully boned, this is a 'Princess' gown, fitted to the hips and then with a complex 'collapsed' bustle beyond the hips.
I am sure she would have been for a bridesmaid. Too fussy for anything else, unless from a very wealthy family.
I think you can see the detail - masses of shirring allows the silk to blossom out into puffs where the shirring allows. Chemical lace, lightweight silk and corded silk velvet - so much fuss!
Gorgeous little hidden pocket to the side back of the bustle.
She came with a bonnet with the same shirring. Heavily scalloped and with lace, there are twists of silk between the lace layers. I feel sure they are a match, but you must decide for yourself. Same silk, same lining, but different lace.
The bonnet has a name written inside, but difficult to make out.
There is mild discolouration here and there, and a few very minor holes. Lots of 'bits' of sewing to do. A few hooks and eyes missing. The bonnet needs ties and the inner bustle of the dress needs ties adding to make it even more complex.
An experienced collector will know exactly what to do.
I may even do a bit myself, depending on how busy I am. Now that really is a rare offer! She is just so sweet!
Please note that the wedding gown of the same era will not be for sale on . They just look so lovely together!
