H LLOYD,Watch Maker...Hartwick, Todd\'s Vill

Rare perpetual calendar watchpaper, circa 1820.Most 18th and many 19th century pocket watches were ‘pair cased,’ so called because the inner case or ‘box’ was housed within an outer protecting case. This was done to prevent dirt and moisture entering via the winding hole in the inner case. The outer is removed to wind the watch and these were supplied with a fitted silk liner to stop any chaffing between the two cases. From there it was a simple step to place a purpose-made, small circular tradecard (watchpaper) in what is such a safe and convenient position that would continue to advertise the watchmaker every time the watch was wound.

54 mm diameter. NB: These calendar watchpapers are very rare and rarely survive in complete condition. This is lacking the small paper strip engraved with the days of the week which is threaded through 14 slits made in the body of the paper. It is also extremely rare being an American produced perpetual calendar paper.

A very rarewatchpaper from the largest private collection of horological ephemera in the UK. For more information on the subject the article on my website, as well as my illustrated article on \'Watchpapers\' in the April 2001 issue of Antique Collecting.
