Wonderful bookends that I am calling Lamp of Knowledge as the pieces have the design elements customary to that concept: lamp, books, owls (associated with Athena, goddess of wisdom). But these are more elaborate - and modern - than the usual design...instead of an oil lamp, this one seems to be electric, with what appears to be a cord wrapped around the upright (or pipe). And a really cool shade which makes me think of Bradley Hubbard lamps.
A 3-piece design: separate base, back plate and front plate, held together with metal screws (not all of which appear to be original).
Cast iron (yes, a magnet sticks) by Judd, their stock number 9742 cast into the back plate. I have an original Judd catalogue which shows this set, with this number, described as \"cast metal. Finished in dark colors.\" Unfortunately, no name is given to the piece in that catalogue. If any one wishes a photo of that catalogue entry, just ask. Circa 1920\'s or early \'30s.
Judd made 2 lesser versions of bookends with Lamp of Knowledge theme. One, in fact, is a smaller version of this exact same design, though according to a referencebook, it bears a different stock number (9986) and is shorter (4 3/4 inches tall). In my original Judd catalogue, the entry cited above says the version with number 9742 is 7 1/2 inches long, which agrees with the set I am listing here. So, of what looks to be a total of 3 different \"Lamp of Knowledge\" bookend versions by Judd, MINE IS THE BEST.
Condition is excellent, no damage to the metal structures, nothing dented in, broken off or glued back on. The 3 components are secured firmly and tightly to each other, no wiggle. Finish mostly is in very good shape, some nicks and scuffs on the bases (one looks as though it sat in water for a while); some chipping to finish along to edges of the lamp shade, but PAINT IS ORIGINAL AND MOSTLY INTACT. Both pieces sit flat and stable. Felts on bottoms could be original, tho I cannot be sure.
6 inches tall; base is 7 1/2 inches wide and 2 1/4 inches deep. And very heavy, 5 1/4 pounds EACH PIECE.
Perfect gift for the Judd collector or lover of books or owls in your family.
